During the war of Russia against Ukraine, two Russian types of troops have lost their significance and potential in the defense system of the Russian Federation. We are talking about the echeloned air defense, which is currently constantly under attack by the Ukrainian army, as well as the engineering troops.
Analyst Alexander Kovalenko reported this on Ukrainian TV.
The military analyst noted that the consequences of Ukraine’s strikes on Russian facilities and temporarily occupied territories are the destruction of air defense systems and, as a consequence, “blind zones” of defense, as well as damage to special equipment at the front and in the rear. In both cases, the Russian army is experiencing a shortage of spare parts, microchips and spare parts due to Western sanctions and the cessation of supplies.
Thus, in the third year of the war, there is no point in talking about organized defense by air defense systems. Now the available air defense systems are used only in limited quantities to protect key objects.
“In the regions bordering Ukraine and in the nearby areas there is no effective layered air defense that could protect these territories,” the analyst noted.
The analyst recalled that Russia turned to North Korea for help in creating fortifications, which is due to the absence of full-fledged engineering troops in the Russian Federation. These troops have almost completely disappeared due to significant losses in special equipment. According to Alexander Kovalenko, the Russians are incapable of restoring these losses in principle, especially at the pace required by the front.
Thus, the engineering troops and air defense of the Russian Federation lost their ability to perform their designated functions.
S-400 destroyed in Crimea
On the night of August 2, Ukraine again dealt a crushing blow to Russian air defense forces. The S-300 and S-400 installations that were being installed on the peninsula were destroyed. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has not yet officially commented on this information, and the Russian authorities, as is tradition, attributed all the explosions to “air defense work” and the fall of ATACMS missile debris.
However, the telegram channel “Krymskiy Veter” reports that at night in Sevastopol, at the heights of Kaya-Bash, a position of the S-400 “Triumph” air defense missile system was preliminarily hit – 4 launchers based on the MAZ-543 and a 92N6 radar.
The analyst notes that we should still wait for official comments from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on this matter, but also notes that along with the Russian Air Defense Forces, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are also destroying radar stations, without which the S-400 and S-300 crews are blind.
Each SAM division has 2-3 radar stations, without which the work of an entire troop unit becomes useless. Therefore, the main target of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is the radar station, and only then the air defense system itself.
Earlier, “Kursor” reported that on the night of August 3, the Morozovsk airfield in Russia, where Su-24 and Su-34 were based, was hit, and oil depots and the Atlas plant were damaged.
