Gangjin-gun won an award of excellence at the 2024 National Manifesto Competition. Gangjin-gun announced on July 31 that it won an award of excellence for ‘Gangjin Puso’ at the ‘2024 National Basic Local Government Heads Manifesto Best Practice Competition’ co-hosted by the Korea Manifesto Implementation Headquarters and Gyeongnam Research Institute.
The military won an award for excellence in the local culture revitalization category for the national representative rural stay-type lifestyle tourism, ‘Gangjin Fu-so (FU-SO)’. Gangjin Fu-so (FU-SO) is an abbreviation for ‘Feeling-Up, Stress-Off’, which means to increase emotions and relieve stress, and is also used in the Jeolla dialect with ambiguous meanings such as ‘to take it out’ or ‘to put it down’.
Starting with the first ‘Student Puso’ in May 2015, the county has expanded the topics and themes of the Puso to include ‘Puso for the general public’, ‘Puso for a week living in Gangjin’, ‘Puso for civil servants’, and ‘Integrity education’, and has developed repeatedly over the past nine years. As of early July, 63,436 people have visited and generated 5.83884 billion won in farm household income, suggesting a new model for residential rural tourism and establishing itself as a representative signature project of Gangjin-gun that creates regional development.
Puso began in 2015 as an idea from the then-governor of Gangjin-won. Puso was born after considering a system in which Gangjin’s abundant tourism resources would be fully returned to the income of farmers. Initially, it gained explosive popularity by connecting rural lodgings and various experience programs centered around student groups. When students appeared in the village, new vitality came to the rural village.
As overseas travel was blocked due to the spread of COVID-19, the military joined forces with Puso farmers again to launch new packages such as Puso for students, Puso for the general public, a week-long stay in Gangjin, and a one-night city tour. They have kept Puso alive by responding flexibly and quickly.
Gangjin-gun, which early on discovered the growth engine of the region in ‘tourism’, is receiving national attention for its pioneering moves, such as the groundbreaking ‘Half-price Gangjin tourism’ program during the 8th local government election.
The ‘Manifesto Best Practice Competition’ is a competition to discover excellent pledges and policies of local governments across the country and share the results. This year, 148 local governments across the country entered 353 cases in 7 fields, and fierce competition took place with 186 cases passing the first document screening.
Gangjin County Governor Gang Jin-won said, “As we have passed the halfway point of the 8th local government and are now in the second half of its term, we will work to substantially promote key campaign pledges and continuously discover excellent policies to bring about innovative changes in Gangjin County.”
