Every August 6, the Church celebrates the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which took place in the presence of the Apostles John, Peter and James.
Two things define the moment: the conversation between Jesus with Moses and Elijah, and the voice of God that bursts from a cloud saying: “This is my Son, the man I love. Listen to him” (Lk. 9, Mk. 9, Mt. 17).

According to the evangelical account, the Transfiguration took place on a high and lonely mountain called Tabor, which in Hebrew means “God’s covering.”
In the Catechism
Referring to this extraordinary event, the Catechism of the Catholic Church (555) notes: “For an instant, Jesus shows his divine glory, which confirms Peter’s confession. It also shows that it is necessary to go through the Cross in Jerusalem to ‘enter into his glory’ (Lk 24, 26).
“Moses and Elijah saw the glory of God on the mountain; The Law and the prophets announced the suffering of the Messiah (cf. Lk 24, 27). The Passion of Jesus is the excellence of the Father,” says the Catechism.

“Lord, how good it is here!”
St. Jerome comments on the passage with expressions that emphasize God the Father’s view of Jesus: “This is my Son, not Moses or Elijah. These are my servants; that one, Son. This is my Son: of the same nature, of the same substance that I have, that abides in me and that is all that I am. I’m sure those others love me too, but this one is my favorite. So listen to him (…) He is the Lord, these other people, the fellow servants. Moses and Elijah talk about Christ. They are your fellow servants. Do not honor the servants in the same way as the Lord: pay attention only to the Son of God”, concludes the reflection of the holy translator of the Bible.
For his part, St. Thomas Aquinas emphasizes the Trinitarian aspect of this theophany. [manifestación divina]: “The whole Trinity visible: the Father in the voice, the Son in the person, the Spirit in the luminous cloud.”
Finally, it is important to consider the reaction of the direct witnesses to the miracle. When the Transfiguration was over, Peter said, “Lord, how good it is here!” (Mt 17, 4), he goes down from the mountain without understanding what happened. Saint Augustine, in a sermon, refers to the apostle with some beautiful words that remind us, just as Jesus reminded Peter, that life cannot be stopped, that we are only passing through and that God’s definite reflection can only be done only in brightness:
“Go (you, Peter) to suffer on earth, to serve on earth, to be despised and tortured on earth. Life passes away; The bread comes down to being hungry; the Way comes down to make you walk; the Source comes down to quench the thirst; And you, will you refuse to suffer?”
The day will come without end, when we will say “How good it is here!” and we will remain in the presence of the Transfigured Father forever, in all his glory and glory.
The Transformation as “antibody”“
It can be said that many people today feel that social life or culture is in decline. Some have even fallen into despair or spiritual exhaustion. Faced with these phenomena, Christ appears today, ‘brighter’ than ever, radiant, full of light.
It is our renewed confidence that the best is always yet to come, and that what is bad can always be changed.
Do not let us fall into the temptation of discouragement, the old strategy to forget the wonders of God’s love, even in the most difficult circumstances.
Pope Benedict XVI noted, on 6 August 2013, in relation to this festival:
“How much need we also have in our time to come out of the darkness of evil to find the joy of the children of light! May Mary receive for us this gift, which we remembered yesterday, with particular enthusiasm, in the annual year .commemoration of the dedication of the basilica of Santa María Maggiore”.
