Sofia is the best city to live in the EU after retirement, Forbes magazine reported, referring to the latest study by the Moneypenny research company. The study covers the 50 most populated cities in the European Union. The factors used to compile the ranking are retirement age, average rent price, available free space, access to health services, number of gyms, cafes, etc.
The average retirement age in the Bulgarian capital is lower than the other cities included in the ranking, with men usually retiring at the age of 64 and women at the age of 62, according to Forbes in its material entitled “Bulgaria’s lively capital is the best city in Europe to retire according to a new study”.
Sofia was a great option for retirees who want to increase their savings. The funds needed to live comfortably are said to be 148,590 euros ($163,035), with other cities in the ranking requiring twice that amount or even more.
Our capital has a cost of living index of 41.2 and an overall score of 5.5. This is due to
average rent of £322.36 and utilities of £108.27
per month. This means minimum pension savings need to be just £126,301 (the lowest in the UK and EU charts).
“Sofia has 69% access to health care, 27.85% green areas, 25 fitness clubs, 2 golf courses and 246 cafes,” the publication writes.
“Sofia offers a high quality of life at affordable prices. Rich history and culture – from ancient ruins to lively museums and theaters. Delicious cuisine that is a real culinary experience. The people of Sofia are known for their warmth and hospitality,” Deputy Mayor for Tourism Nikola Barbutov wrote on Facebook.
“With fast internet, accessible workspaces and a growing community of entrepreneurs, Sofia is ideal for remote work.
With low taxes, skilled labor and a strategic location, it attracts more and more investments.”
he also writes.
In second place in the ranking is the Hungarian capital Budapest, which is the best city in terms of cafes and socializing. Zagreb is third, offering pensioners the most nature and greenery. Fourth on the list is Bucharest, which is considered one of the cheapest places to retire.
