Mūze-Sirmā competed in the first qualification group, where with a result of 60.30 centimeters she was sixth in the competition of 16 javelin throwers, while Sietiņa took 11th place in the second group with a result of 60.47 meters.
In order to enter the main competition, it was necessary to throw the javelin at least 62 meters or to be among the 12 best athletes from the 32 participants of both groups.
The only scored attempt for Muzei-Sirma was the first. In the second attempt, the Latvian’s javelin flew a little beyond the 55-meter mark, however, the Latvian intentionally crossed the boundary line of the sector, the broadcast was not counted, and she did the same after the third throw about 54 meters away.
On the other hand, Sietiņa competed in the second qualification group, where in the first attempt she threw the javelin to a mark of 56.73 meters, in the second attempt she showed a result of 59.46 meters, but in the third run she improved her result to 60.47 meters, which was not enough to enter the main competition.
Three javelin throwers qualified from the first group – in the first attempt, Joanna van Dyk from DĀR achieved a personal record of 64.22 meters, and in the second attempt, Australians Mackenzie Little and Catherine Mitchell showed results of 62.82 and 62.40 meters, respectively.
Meanwhile, in the second group, five athletes threw the javelin beyond 62 meters – Tokyo Olympic Games vice-champion Maria Andrejczyk (65.52 meters) from Poland, Croatian Sara Kolak (64.57 meters), Flora Denisa Ruiz Urtado (64.40 meters) from Colombia, Elina Tsengko from Greece (63.22 meters) and Haruka Hitoguchi (62.67 meters) from Japan.
Spain’s Julinmis Aguilar (61.95 meters), Maria Teresa Obst (61.82 meters) from Norway, Czech Nikola Ogorodnikova (61.16 meters) and Japan’s Momone Ueda (61.08 meters) also entered the main competition with the result.
This is the third Olympic Games start for Mūze-Sirmaja. In 2012, she took 13th place in London, four years later in Rio de Janeiro, as part of the Latvian delegation, she did not start due to an injury, but three years ago in Tokyo, she took 26th place.
Sietiņa took 21st place three years ago in Tokyo.
The main javelin competition for women will take place on Saturday.
The Olympic Games will take place in the French capital until August 11, and not only in the French capital, but also in 16 other places, including the French overseas territory of French Polynesia. The Games program includes 32 sports and 329 sets of medals will be distributed.
At the Paris Games, Latvia will be represented by 29 athletes in 14 sports: 3×3 basketball, BMX supercross and freestyle, show jumping, equestrian sports, mountain biking, shooting, modern pentathlon, swimming, beach volleyball, weightlifting, road cycling, tennis and athletics.
