And once again Locarno beckons to the shores of Lake Maggiore: 17 films from all over the world are competing for the Golden Leopard. Thousands came to the opening.

The 77th Locarno International Film Festival begins this evening with the premiere of the French historical drama “Le Déluge” (“The Water”). Thousands of spectators attended the air show gala on Locarno’s Piazza Grande. The festival is showing 225 feature, documentary, short and experimental films until August 17th. There are 17 films from all over the world in the international competition (“Concorso internazionale”) for the Golden Leopard, the first prize of the festival.
Five of the films in the “Concorso internazionale” were made with strong German participation: the feature films “Death Will Come” by the German director Christoph Hochhäusler, “Transamazonia” by the German director Pia Marais, “Yeni Safak Solarken” ( “As the new Dawn fades”) by the Turkish director Gürcan Keltek, the theater plays “The Sparrow in the Fireplace” by the Swiss director Ramon Zürcher, which features German stars like Maren Eggert and Luise Heyer, and the documentary “Bogancloch ” by British film artist Ben Rivers.
In the young talent competition “Cineasti del presente” (“Filmmakers of the Present”) with 15 films, the German director Willy Hans is represented with the premiere of his feature film “The Spot”. The youth sport, organized in Switzerland, is financed by Swiss and German developers. The festival awards will be awarded at an open-air gala on the evening of August 17th. (dpa)
