“The High Instructions of His Majesty the King are clear regarding the support for all efforts deployed by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN aimed at bringing Libya out of this institutional crisis that it has been facing for several years,” said Mr. Bourita during a joint press briefing with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily.

“The Kingdom of Morocco reiterates its support and assistance to Mr. Bathily for all his relevant efforts, in accordance with a calm approach based on trust and support for the Libyans so that they can achieve, themselves, a solution to their problems,” he added.

Mr. Bourita stressed that the credibility and trust enjoyed by Mr. Bathily among all Libyan parties constitute “the best proof” that his approach of listening and bringing together points of view in anticipation of the holding of presidential and legislative elections is likely to promote a solution to this institutional crisis.

In this context, the minister insisted that Morocco still considers that holding elections remains the most appropriate solution for this institutional crisis, and affirms that these electoral deadlines should constitute the starting point of a new phase in this brother country, focused on stability, legitimacy and responding to the needs of the Libyan people.

“There is now a legal framework thanks to the meetings held in Bouznika which resulted in the promulgation of electoral laws that were not in place when the elections were announced on December 24, 2021,” Mr. Bourita noted, maintaining that this legal framework, although not ideal, remains the best possible option for holding these elections.

The minister also recalled that the Kingdom, which hosted several meetings between the Libyan parties, has constantly worked on each occasion to bring their points of view closer together without interfering in their internal affairs.

“Today, the Kingdom is ready to support the dynamic that Mr. Bathily wishes to launch in order to enrich the existing legal framework by means of institutional political compromises,” he said, adding that the implementation of these compromises will make it possible to initiate the phase of organizing the elections.

Moreover, Mr. Bourita stressed that Morocco constantly insists that the resolution of the Libyan crisis will not come from outside, but should emanate from the Libyans themselves, which has earned the Kingdom credibility among the Libyan parties.

“The Kingdom is ready to support and accompany Mr. Bathily in advancing the political process in Libya,” the minister stressed, expressing his wish that the relevant ideas could be translated into initiatives, then into compromises and solutions that would lead to the holding of elections.
