A year after its opening, the “Golden Gate of Romania” is having problems again. We are talking about the suspension bridge over the Danube River near the city of Braila, known as the “Golden Gate of Romania”, which once again went into repair.

Until August 26, traffic on part of the bridge is limited to one lane in each direction. It is necessary to lay a new layer of asphalt, as the road has become uneven due to the heat. It was also found that some bolts were not properly tightened, and water intrusion into the anchor blocks occurred.

According to officials of the National Company of Highways and National Roads (CNAIR), the entire bridge should be re-asphalted and waterproofed to prevent such problems from occurring again. All work will be done at the builder’s expense, as the facility has a ten-year warranty.

For the same reasons, there were also repair works in June and July.

The suspension bridge over the Danube was opened on July 6 last year. Shortly after, bumps appeared on the tarmac at the bridge’s on-off and on-off sections, and authorities blamed lorry drivers for not complying with the summer tonnage limit of 7.5 tonnes. At the end of August last year, all 100,000 bolts in the bridge structure were checked and 401 were found to be loose.

The “Golden Gate of Romania” is the largest bridge ever built in the country, the third largest in Europe and the last over the Danube before it flows into the Black Sea. It connects the ports of the Black Sea and the Danube Delta with the rest of the country and with the wider trans-European transport network. The suspended structure is nearly 2 kilometers long, stands 38 meters above the water and has four lanes. The total value of the project is 2.02 billion lei (about 500 million euros), BTA reports.
