New Delhi: The Election Commission said on Wednesday that elections will be held on September 3 for the 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in nine states. Notification for this will be issued on August 14. The last date for filing nomination papers will be August 21. Scrutiny of the nominations will be done on August 22. Elections will be held on September 3 from 9 am to 4 pm. The counting of votes will start at 5 pm on the same day and the results will be declared.
The commission said that the seats of 10 Rajya Sabha members from nine states became vacant after they won the Lok Sabha elections. While Dr. K Keshav Rao from Telangana left BRS and joined Congress and Mamta Mohanta from Odisha left BJD and joined BJP, both resigned. While Rajya Sabha seats became vacant due to 10 members contesting Lok Sabha elections from seven states. These 10 members won the Lok Sabha elections. 10 Rajya Sabha seats became vacant after the current members, including Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal and Jyotiraditya Scindia, became Lok Sabha members.

The election process will be completed on September 6

These 10 members include Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam, Misa Bharti and Vivek Thakur from Bihar, Deependra Singh Hooda from Haryana, Jyotiraditya M Scindia from Madhya Pradesh, Udayanraje Bhosale and Piyush Vedprakash Goyal from Maharashtra, KC Venugopal from Rajasthan and Biplab Kumar Deb from Tripura. They were earlier Rajya Sabha members and won after contesting the Lok Sabha elections. After this, these 10 seats from Rajya Sabha became vacant. The Commission said that the last date for withdrawal of nomination for members of Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tripura has been kept as 26 August. Whereas if any candidate contesting elections from Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Telangana and Odisha wants to withdraw his name, then he can withdraw his name till 27 August. This election process will be completed on 6 September.
