The vice president of the CPCCS, Mishell Calvache, hinted that, after the appointment of Mario Godoy as president of the Judicial Council, with the votes of Augusto Verduga and Yadira Saltos, close to Correísmo; Nicole Bonifaz and Johanna Verdezoto (who would not have political affinity); and with the “disguised” support of Juan Esteban Guarderas, Correísmo not only took over the CPCCS, but also the Judicial Council.

The appointment of Mario Fabricio Godoy as president of the judiciary Council (CJ), could have consequences for a Correa sector in the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs), and for three members who, apparently, would not have any closeness to political parties

Mishell Calvache, Vice President of the Cpccs, asked, today July 11, 2024 in an interview in teleamazon, to the judges of the Electoral Dispute Court (TCE) and the Constitutional Court (CC), to act to prevent the Cpccs from being manipulated again by a political party (Citizen Revolution) and to move, he said, towards taking power and justice.

He hinted that, after the appointment of Godoy, with the votes of Augusto Verduga, Yadira Saltos, close to Correaism; Nicole Bonifaz and Johanna Verdezotowho would have no political affinity; and with the “disguised” support from councillor Juan Esteban GuarderasCorreísmo not only took over the Cpccs, but also the Judicial Council.

“The authorities must act because this is out of our hands; the judges of the TCE must remove these members of the Blue League, and the Constitutional Court must reactivate itself by following up on the 2019 ruling (which issued parameters for the appointment of the principal member of the Judiciary).”

According to Calvache, the appointed president of the Judiciary would have controversial clients such as two brothers who were sentenced for drug trafficking. “(Godoy) is closely linked to the parties, he has defended several members of Correísmo,” “So, how do we talk about independence and notorious integrity if we already have several precedents through which we knew where he is aligned?” he questioned.

Calvache also blamed a Correa-supporting majority, joined by the government, in the Oversight Commission, which, in a session on July 10, 2024, pressured them, he said, to change the results that led to the appointment of Dunia Martínez as president of the Judiciary on July 8.

According to the vice president of the Cpccs, in the Oversight Commission they were “threatened with a impeachment» and forced them to go against the Cpccs regulations that determine the parameters for reconsideration of the votes, and contravening article 19 which states that, in the reconsideration only the people who were part of the previous session can participate (plenary session of July 8 where Dunia Martínez was appointed).

Augusto Verduga, who had requested paternity leave, did not attend the session on July 8; nor did member Nicole Bonifaz, who claimed that she was not allowed to enter the virtual session.

Their votes counted so that, in the session of July 11, 2024, where both were reinstated and were able to intervene, Godoy was appointed as president of the Judiciary. “With this strategy, Godoy, an official close to Correa, was appointed,” he insisted. (SC)
