Priest Reflects on Loss of Writer Daniel Mastral
August 7, 2024
Priest and professor Luiz Sayão expressed his grief over the passing of writer Daniel Mastral in a social media post. He described Mastral as a thoughtful individual whose struggles were evident in his writings.
“His thoughts sometimes appeared with questions, pain, and searching. That made a mark on me. I found it with sadness news of his death,” Sayão wrote.
The priest acknowledged the vulnerability of all individuals, regardless of their experiences, backgrounds, or beliefs. He emphasized the need for spiritual, physical, and emotional care.
Drawing parallels to the biblical figures Elijah and Jonah, Sayão argued that facing adversity is an essential part of life. He quoted C.S. Lewis, suggesting that one can only truly understand the magnitude of evil by confronting it personally.
The priest concluded his message with a call for humility, repentance, and reliance on God’s grace to overcome pain and suffering.
