Tehran: Russia has begun delivering its advanced air defense system and radar to Tehran, according to sources cited by the New York Times. This delivery coincides with heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, as Iran has threatened to retaliate against Israel. While the specific air defense system has not been disclosed, it is believed to be the highly sophisticated S-400. Iran had previously requested the system.
During a visit by Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu to Tehran on Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discussed the recent killing of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh and Israel’s attack on Gaza. While Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s desire to avoid regional conflict, he warned Israel that it would face consequences for its actions.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has also vowed retribution for the killing of Haniyeh, calling it an act of martyrdom.
The tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated significantly in recent days. Israel recently killed Fuad Shukr, the military chief of Iran-backed extremist group Hezbollah, in an airstrike in Lebanon. Iran promptly blamed Israel for Haniya’s murder and accused it of escalating the situation in the Middle East.
