The German automobile concern BMW has successfully tested a humanoid robot, DPA reported, citing the state-run news agency BTA. The automaker has been using the Figure 02 robot to place sheet metal parts in the body shop under real production conditions at its American plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
“The development in the field of robotics is very promising,” said BMW Production Director Milan Nedelkovic. “With the early test operation, we are now defining possible applications for humanoid robots in manufacturing.”
The two-legged “Figure 02” robot, which is human-sized, can walk and place various complex parts with millimeter accuracy. It is ideal for physically demanding, tiring, or dangerous tasks.
BMW and California-based robot manufacturer Figure already plan to prepare the robot for future applications and further develop the Figure 02 model.
