Noboa Accuses Politicians of Alliances with Mafias
On August 8th, 2024, President Daniel Noboa of Ecuador accused certain political parties of aligning themselves with criminal gangs in Durán. He emphasized that the fight against these criminal organizations continues.
Noboa, who recently criticized mayors in Guayas, announced his upcoming visit to Durán next week to confront organized crime alongside the police and military. “We are going in with everything, to give them what they deserve,” he declared, acknowledging Durán as one of the most violent cities in the country.
During his visit, Noboa distributed 11,000 bulletproof vests to police officers and inaugurated the dialysis unit at the local hospital. He criticized the previous administration for neglecting both healthcare and security, accusing them of making deals with criminal gangs.
The President emphasized that the government’s ongoing war against terrorist groups remains ongoing and requires continued support for both the police and military.
Durán, located near Guayaquil, has become a stronghold for criminal gangs like Choneros and Chone Killers, leading to its classification as one of the world’s most violent cities. Official data reports 234 violent deaths in the city so far in 2024, more than three times the rate of other districts in Guayaquil.
