Nighttime Wonders: Witness the Perseids and More in the Sky This Week
August 8, 2024
Montpellier astrophysicist Éric Josselin shares insights on the upcoming celestial spectacle, The Nights of Stars, happening from August 9th to 11th.
What are the Perseids?
This dazzling natural event is a meteor shower originating from the constellation Perseus. Tiny dust grains, remnants of ancient comets, burn up in the atmosphere, creating streaks of light across the night sky.
Where and when to watch:
While visible throughout France, the Hérault region enjoys slightly clearer skies. While Montpellier itself might be slightly light-polluted, areas like Pic Saint-Loup, Aniane Observatory, and the Argelliers are ideal for unobstructed views. The peak visibility is expected between August 12th and 13th.
Tips for optimal observation:
Escape light pollution and find a secluded spot.
Lie comfortably on your back and locate the constellation Perseus.
Use a star map for easy identification.
Remember, telescopes are not suitable for this particular phenomenon.
Beyond shooting stars:
The summer sky offers a plethora of other wonders. Saturn, though low in the night sky, is visible early on. Jupiter, Mars, and the Andromeda galaxy are also visible with the naked eye or through telescopes.
A once-in-a-lifetime event:
Be incredibly lucky to witness a nova, a rare stellar explosion that occurs every 70 years. Keep your eyes peeled for a sudden brightening of a star in the coming days.
