COP29 is the only chance to close the climate action and finance gap.
As reported by Day.Az on Monday, this was stated by the Secretary General of the international association Commonwealth Patricia Scotland in an interview with the Press Trust of India.
“The climate talks at COP29 in Baku represent the world’s only chance to close the gaps in climate action and finance, which is essential to rebuilding trust between countries and protecting lives and livelihoods,” she said.
In the interview, Scotland emphasized the importance of engaging fossil fuel producers as allies in the fight against climate change.
Let us recall that Azerbaijan will host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in November this year. The decision to do so was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai in December last year. Over the course of two weeks, Baku will host approximately 70-80 thousand foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP stands for Conference of Parties, which is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The convention has 198 parties. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
