Kimberly García and César Rodríguez put forth their best effort this Wednesday, August 7, in the race walking marathon of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, representing Peru well. The national duo, despite not winning a medal, came very close to achieving a remarkable feat in the mixed relays held at the Trocadero Square.
Everything started well with the male representative of the ‘Team Peru’ marching in the top positions. Gradually, he distanced himself from the main peloton of the competition and handed off the baton to ‘Kimy’ in 12th place. Then, the Peruvian did her part and staged an epic comeback, reaching first place in less than five kilometers.
García was relieved, and Rodríguez took on the responsibility of staying among the top competitors. Although he fell further behind the leader during the race, he maintained his sixth place, and subsequently, his partner faced the final stretch, dreaming of a medal.
Unfortunately, Kimberly was only able to close the gap and could not reach the podium despite her tireless struggle until the end. The national duo finished the competition in fourth place with a time of 2:51:56, just 18 seconds from bronze. With this, they earned Peru’s fifth Olympic diploma in Paris 2024.
