Japanese media reported that “two earthquakes struck western Japan on Thursday, prompting tsunami warnings for the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku.”
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan, prompting tsunami warnings.
“Another earthquake struck the same area with a magnitude of 7.1, and authorities issued warnings of a tsunami of up to one meter high on the Pacific coast of the western islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, and said that the Miyazaki area in Kyushu had already seen waves of up to 20 centimeters high,” the report said.
Media reported that “a tsunami hit Miyazaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan after the two earthquakes.”
In March 2011, the country was struck by one of the worst disasters in modern times when a 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck near its northeastern coast, resulting in a tsunami that killed 18,500 people or left them missing. This disaster also led to the Fukushima nuclear accident, in which at least 30 people were killed as a result of an earthquake that struck the country last January.
