Sailors Wait for Medal Race Due to Lack of Wind

Sailors Mateo Majdalani and Eugenia Bosco will have to wait until Thursday to compete in the Medal Race in Nacra 17, as the race was suspended due to the lack of wind off the coast of Marseille. The Argentines are currently in second place in the general table and have a strong chance of securing Argentina’s second medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Majdalani and Bosco entered the Medal Race after accumulating 41 points in the first 12 races. Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti lead the pack with 27 points, while Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson of New Zealand, and John Gimson and Anna Burnet of Britain, are tied for third with 47 points each.
To win the gold medal, Majdalani and Bosco would need to finish at least eight positions ahead of the Italians, which seems unlikely. However, they have a good chance of securing second place. To do so, they only need to finish two positions below the New Zealanders and the British.
The race was originally scheduled for 9:43 (Argentina time) but was repeatedly postponed due to the lack of wind and was finally rescheduled for Thursday. The Nacra 17 is the category in which Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza won the historic gold medal in Rio 2016.
Sailing has been a successful sport for Argentina, with notable performances in recent Games dating back to Atlanta 1996. Carlos Espínola won silver in the Mistral class in both Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, while Serena Amato earned bronze in Europe in 2000. In Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, Espínola and Lange won bronze in the Tornado, while De la Fuente and Lucas Calabrese secured bronze in the 470 in London 2012.
