Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from Olympics Due to Weight Violation
New Delhi, 09 August 2024 – Following Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the 50 kg weight category competition at the Olympics, the central government today issued a statement in the Lok Sabha.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya elaborated on the incident, stating that Vinesh’s weight was found to be 50 kg 100 grams, exceeding the permitted limit. India has formally protested this decision to the International Wrestling Federation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has spoken to the head of the Indian Olympic Association, PT Usha, and instructed her to take appropriate action.
The government has provided Vinesh with all necessary support throughout her preparation for the Olympics. This includes a personal staff of experts in their respective fields, as well as financial assistance for additional personal support staff.
Vinesh’s Journey to the Finals
Vinesh became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final of the 50 Kg wrestling Olympics by winning three matches on Tuesday, August 6. She defeated Guzman Lopez of Cuba, Oksana Livach of Ukraine, and Yui Susaki of Japan.
Disqualification and Reaction
Vinesh was ultimately disqualified from the competition due to her weight exceeding the limit. While her medal was confirmed, the color was changed. This news shattered the dreams of 140 crore Indians who had hoped for her victory. Her uncle, Mahavir Phogat, expressed his resignation, stating that no medal would be awarded.
Prime Minister Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed their support and acknowledged Vinesh’s achievements. The Indian Wrestling Association President, Sanjay Singh, placed the blame on the coach and nutritionist, claiming they were responsible for the weight violation.
