Former Guatemalan Congress President Extradited from Mexico
August 8, 2024 – Former President of the Guatemalan Congress, Luis Rabbé, was extradited from Mexico to Guatemala early this Thursday, according to the Ministry of Interior.
The extradition stems from a corruption case known as “Plazas Fantasma.” Rabbé, who previously represented the UCN and Lider parties in the Congress, is accused of involvement in the case.
Images released by the authorities show Rabbé in shackles, being escorted by personnel from the National Civil Police and wearing a black cap covering his hands. He has been transferred to the Court Tower.
The Public Ministry reported in March 2021 that Mexico had informed Guatemala of their intention to extradite Rabbé. His immunity was stripped in 2016 following a complaint filed alleging his connection to the “Plazas Fantasma” case. He had previously fled to Mexico shortly before the decision to strip him of his immunity.
Hugo Fernando García Gudiel replaced Rabbé in the Congress.
