The future of sheep farming in the Haute-Corse region of France is uncertain. Maria-Petra Jeanne, a sheep breeder in Oletta, expresses deep concern about the second wave of the ovine catarrhal fever (SCV) epidemic that has struck the department. In her own flock of 370 sheep, the virus has already claimed the lives of 125 animals. “It’s not over yet, others are still sick,” she laments.
The Haute-Corse Agricultural Chamber estimates that over 1,000 animals have died from the virus since mid-May. During the first wave of the virus in autumn 2023, which primarily affected the Corse-du-Sud department, 3,000 deaths were recorded. Beyond the mortality rate, it’s the recurring peaks of the viral load that are alarming the industry.
