Manipur Burning with Ethnic Violence, Assam Rifles to be Removed
Imphal/New Delhi, 2024-08-09 – Manipur has been engulfed in the flames of ethnic violence for over a year, and the situation remains volatile. In a recent development, the Home Ministry has ordered the withdrawal of two battalions of Assam Rifles from the state.
People of the Kuki community in Manipur have expressed their discontent with this decision and have been protesting. Sources claim that two battalions of Assam Rifles will be transferred to Jammu and Kashmir from August 18th, originating from Arunachal Pradesh.
Awaiting CRPF Deployment
The withdrawal of the Assam Rifles is contingent on the arrival of a CRPF battalion. No official date has been announced for their arrival. The two battalions targeted for withdrawal are currently stationed in Kangwai of Churachandpur and Kamchuk of KPI.
Differing Opinions Emerge
While the Meitei community welcomes the decision to remove the Assam Rifles, the Kuki community remains opposed. The Kuki Students Organization plans to protest on Saturday, demanding the withdrawal of the order. They argue that the Assam Rifles play a vital role in maintaining peace in the border areas, alleging discrimination-free service. The Kuki community fears renewed violence if the Assam Rifles are withdrawn.
Over 220 Lives Lost
Ethnic violence first erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 220 people and displacing over 50,000. Despite ongoing tensions, there is a growing demand for a political solution to end the conflict. Some demand the creation of a Union Territory with an assembly for the hills.
Call for Prioritization
Recently, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat expressed concern over the lack of peace in Manipur and called for its urgent resolution.
