Competition Kicks Off at the Paris Olympics
The Olympic Games in Paris 2024 officially kicked off with the first competitions taking place in Versailles at 2 p.m. Latvian time. Live coverage of the action is available on the LTV7 television channel.
Athletes will compete in a variety of disciplines throughout the day, including show jumping, fencing bonus round, swimming and running combined.
Pentathlon Highlights
In the first modern pentathlon in fencing, Russian athlete Shvetsov secured third place with 240 points in the competition of 36 athletes. Egyptian athlete Ahmed Elgendi, who finished second in the Tokyo Olympics, currently leads the standings with 250 points, while Oleksandr Tovkay from Ukraine is in second with 245 points.
Medals Galore
Today, a total of 35 sets of medals will be awarded across various sports, including boxing, breaking, sailing, combat sports, show jumping, football, table tennis, canoeing and kayaking, field hockey, marathon swimming, artistic gymnastics, beach volleyball, sport climbing, weightlifting, taekwondo, track cycling and athletics.
Paris Olympics: A Global Event
The Olympic Games in Paris will run until August 11 and will not be limited to the French capital. The Games will take place in 16 other locations, including the French overseas territory of French Polynesia. The program features 32 sports and 329 sets of medals.
Latvia’s Representation
Latvia will be represented by 29 athletes in 14 sports at the Paris Games. These athletes will compete in disciplines such as 3×3 basketball, BMX supercross and freestyle, show jumping, equestrian sports, mountain biking, shooting, modern pentathlon, swimming, beach volleyball, weightlifting, road cycling, tennis and athletics.
