Nankai Trough ⁤Earthquake Emergency Information Issued

Recent seismic activity in the Nankai Trough region has prompted the ‌Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to⁣ issue an emergency information ⁢regarding a ‌potential major earthquake.

The earthquake occurred on ‌August‍ 8, 2024, at around 4:43 ⁢PM⁣ with a magnitude of 7.1. In response, the JMA issued the “Nankai Trough Earthquake Emergency Information” and later upgraded it to a “Warning of a Major⁤ Earthquake.”

While⁢ the current information does not guarantee an immediate earthquake, heightened‍ vigilance is advised ⁣for the next week.

Areas at Risk ⁢and Preparedness Measures

The Special ⁣Measures Law⁣ for the Promotion of Earthquake ‌Disaster Prevention Measures⁢ has designated 1 metropolitan area, 2 urban prefectures, and ⁣26 ‌prefectures spanning 707 cities and towns as promotion areas. While Sakado City is not a designated area, estimates suggest a ⁤maximum-class earthquake in the Nankai Trough could produce seismic intensities of 5 weak to strong in the city.
