Sahara: Burkina Faso reaffirms its support for the autonomy plan, “credible and realistic solution”
United Nations (New York) – Burkina Faso reaffirmed in New York its support for the autonomy plan as a “credible and realistic solution” to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
“My delegation welcomes and reaffirms its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative. This solution constitutes a credible and realistic alternative in resolving this regional dispute, as it is consistent with international law, the Charter of the United Nations and the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the UN,” stressed the representative of Burkina Faso before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly.
The diplomat also reaffirmed his country’s support for the ongoing political process conducted under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara, which aims to achieve a realistic, pragmatic, lasting and compromise political solution to this regional dispute as recommended by the 18 Security Council resolutions since 2007.
The resolution of this conflict “will undoubtedly contribute to the stability and security of the Sahel region,” he said.
Burkina Faso also welcomed the massive investments made in the southern provinces of the Kingdom for the benefit of the populations of the Moroccan Sahara.
