Ambassador Jaime Gazmuri arrived in Chile today after being expelled from Venezuela. He was received at Santiago Airport by the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, and the Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren.
Upon his arrival, Gazmuri stated that the Venezuelan embassy in Caracas remained “working until the last moment,” particularly in managing the release of a TVN team detained in Chururú. He expressed relief that the issue was ultimately resolved.
Gazmuri described the expulsion as “an arbitrary, unprecedented, unusual, unexpected measure.” He highlighted the efforts made to relocate embassy staff and their families in a short period.
He also emphasized the positive work done to normalize relations with Venezuela, despite the current political crisis.
Gazmuri added that the departure was “normal,” and that they were treated respectfully both at the embassy and during the transfer.
Tohá: “It was outside of all plans”
Minister Tohá echoed Gazmuri’s surprise at the expulsion, calling the situation “something that was out of the question.”
The Foreign Minister praised the embassy’s efforts in Caracas, noting that the local team continues to have their full support.
