President Rumen Radev met with David Wright, commissioner of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, who is visiting Bulgaria. Also present at the meeting was US Ambassador to Bulgaria, Kenneth Merten.
Bulgaria boasts over 50 years of experience in operating nuclear facilities, adhering to the highest safety standards. To foster the industry’s strategic role in the economy, it is crucial to provide training opportunities for more Bulgarian specialists and experts, alongside categorical safety guarantees.
President Radev emphasized that nuclear energy offers autonomy, security, and affordability as a reliable energy source, particularly in the face of growing global energy consumption. The conversation also explored cooperation between Bulgaria and the US in nuclear energy, including the construction of the 7th and 8th units of the Kozloduy NPP and the implementation of the AP-1000 technology. Opportunities for Bulgarian specialists to participate in the management and maintenance of these facilities were also discussed.
David Wright expressed the readiness of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to share its expertise and support Bulgaria in ensuring energy security and stability, not only for the country but also the region.
