UN Resident Coordinator Meets with BNP Leaders

UN resident coordinator Gwen Lewis met with the leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday (August 9) morning. The meeting focused on discussing the current situation in Bangladesh, including the economic situation and the newly formed interim government.
BNP leaders present at the meeting included standing committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, organizational secretary Shama Obaid, and Dhaka-based United Nations human rights expert Huma Khan.
After the meeting, Chowdhury stated, “There has been a big change in Bangladesh. We have achieved independence for the second time.” He expressed appreciation for international support and the mass public’s backing. He also highlighted the crucial role of the United Nations in restoring human rights in Bangladesh.
Lewis emphasized the UN’s support for the interim government, expressing willingness to collaborate in building the future of Bangladesh. Discussions centered around potential cooperation in development initiatives, investigations into post-movement damage, and prioritizing development goals.
The UN resident coordinator expressed hope for the restoration of peace and order, and the continuation of economic development in Bangladesh.
