In response to this incident, President Gabriel Boric stated that Iván Núñez and the TVN cameraman are now “safe and sound” in Colombia.
Journalist Iván Núñez provided details of his arrest and subsequent deportation from Venezuela, along with TVN cameraman José Luis Tapia. The incident occurred this Thursday on the border with Colombia.
Núñez explained that he traveled to Venezuela due to the “international interest generated by the crisis,” adding that they were sent to Cúcuta, Colombia, “with the objective of entering and reporting on what is happening in Venezuela.”
“We left from Colombia, we entered through a Venezuelan highway. We entered in a completely legal manner. We passed four military checkpoints. We reached the Chururú bridge, where we were stopped, but we managed to pass three more checkpoints,” the journalist said.
After their arrest, Núñez and Tapia were taken to a military compound and spent the night in a cell. They were handcuffed and interrogated by the Venezuelan political police. The accusations made against them were “a bit absurd,” Núñez claimed, alleging that they were accused of espionage financed from abroad.
Núñez emphasized that they were not charged with anything and were simply deported. He also suggested that the Venezuelan security services are struggling with complex security problems.
In response to the accusations, Núñez stressed that “we managed to clarify the facts. International journalistic teams are not being allowed to enter Venezuela. We were not charged with anything, we were just deported.”
Faced with this, President Boric stated that Iván Núñez and the TVN cameraman are already “safe and sound” in Colombia, adding that those who prevent serious and professional media from reporting on the reality “demonstrate fear.” He pledged to continue fighting for transparency and respect for the Venezuelan people’s sovereign will.
