The women’s kayak individual 500-meter race took place at the Paris Olympics on Saturday. The final featured the three medalists from the 2021 Tokyo Games: Lisa Carrington, Tamara Csipes, and Emma Jörgensen.
A Chance for History
Carrington, aiming for her eighth gold medal and a record-breaking achievement, paced the field with the best time. Csipes followed closely behind. The Hungarian athlete had high hopes of securing gold in the final.
The final saw Carrington and Csipes get off to a strong start. Csipes held the lead for half the distance before Carrington overtook her. The battle for third place was tight behind them.
Carrington went on to win the final, claiming her eighth gold medal and surpassing Birgit Fischer’s record. The final podium finish was the same as in Tokyo: Csipes in second and Jörgensen in third. Fischer finished fourth, while Gazsó placed sixth.
I was calm because I knew what I had to do. I’m so grateful to have finished my career this way. I have two golds, six medals, and I’ve grown so much as a person, athlete, teammate, and mother.
– Tamara Csipes after the competition.
