Despite the pre-Games anxieties, the metro and RER operated smoothly throughout the event without any major incidents. This remarkable achievement is the culmination of years of work by IDFM and operators, coupled with new systems that have proven their effectiveness.
Frequent metro services, especially in the evenings, alongside a team of dedicated agents guiding tourists and managing crowds, swift interventions in case of traffic disruptions – these were just some of the elements that made the transport system in the Ile-de-France a success during the Olympics. Despite pre-Games fears, these two weeks proved to be a remarkable period of resilience and organization for the network. While daily life in the region had already begun to recover post-pandemic, the Olympics served as an additional catalyst for improvement.
However, the question remains whether the exceptional measures implemented for the Games can be sustained in the long run. While the high frequency of post-Olympic transportation outside rush hour may be desirable for travelers, it is not economically feasible to maintain such a system indefinitely. Valérie Pécresse, president of Île-de-France Mobilités, emphasizes that “it doesn’t make sense to put many metro lines back on line 9 just to serve Roland Garros or Parc des Princes.”
