AU PSC: Morocco reaffirms its responsible commitment to the UN agenda “Women, Peace and Security”

by times news cr

During a PSC meeting focused on the 23rd anniversary of UN Security ‍Council Resolution ‍1325, the Moroccan delegation emphasized their commitment‌ to implementing the resolution. They‌ highlighted the launch ⁣of the first ‌National ‌Action Plan on Women, Peace and⁢ Security in March 2022,⁣ which ⁤emphasizes the vital role of women as agents of change and equal partners in decision-making.

This national action plan aligns with the Vision of HM King Mohammed VI, which aims to‌ promote gender equality and protect women’s rights. The plan was developed through extensive consultations involving various stakeholders,‌ including ministerial departments, national institutions, and civil society organizations, with the support of UN-Women.

The‌ National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security is built on three pillars: ⁤preventive diplomacy, mediation and peacekeeping, the promotion of a culture⁢ of peace and equality, and the economic empowerment of women. It also ‌serves as a regional platform to address⁤ challenges affecting women’s rights, security, and participation across ⁣Africa.

Morocco has a long-standing commitment to upholding peace and ⁤security, participating in peacekeeping operations in Africa⁤ since the 1960s. The delegation highlighted the involvement of Moroccan women ‍in these operations.

“It ‌is crucial to recognize the potential of women in‌ peace negotiations and mediation processes,” the delegation emphasized. “Their participation is ‍essential for effective conflict prevention and the promotion of lasting peace.” ‌They⁤ called‌ for increased involvement of‌ women in all‌ aspects of peacebuilding.

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 aims to protect women during conflicts and ensure their participation in peace processes, in line with the core principles of⁣ the United ‍Nations Charter.

Despite the global support for Resolution 1325, implementation ‍remains inadequate in Africa. Women continue to ⁢bear the brunt of conflict consequences, facing violence, exclusion from peace negotiations, and limited access to ⁣justice. The Moroccan delegation⁣ stressed‍ the need to bridge this gap and empower women to contribute fully to peace and security.
