The organizing committee of the JParis 2024 Olympic Games reaffirmed its goal of halving the consumption of single-use plastic packaging compared to London 2012.
This is despite the profusion of bottles of Coca Cola, one of the main sponsors of the Olympic event, at various locations in the French capital.
Bottles of Fanta, Sprite and Coca Cola are flowing incessantly at Olympic venues, where people have been seen serving the soft drinks in reusable cups, a practice that some say could run counter to the goal of making Paris 2024 the greenest Games in history.
The soft drink company Coca Cola Company announced just in May that nearly 10 million of the 18 million soft drinks served to spectators would be “without single-use plastic.”
But the giant based in Atlanta (United States) said it was forced to use plastic due to “technical and logistical problems,” even though spectators are prohibited from bringing single-use containers into Olympic venues.
A journalist confirmed that at the swimming venue they emptied bottles glass in red and white glasses.
Although 700 water dispensers have been installed at the various venues of the sporting event in France, disposable plastic cups are being used where glass ones are not possible, he said. Georgina Grenon, Head of Sustainability for the Paris Games.
