Bhagalpur/Delhi: Work on the Vikramshila-Kataria rail project is about to begin in Bihar. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced that the project, approved by the Union Cabinet, will significantly enhance connectivity between eastern India and Nepal with North India. The project was finalized in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.
This new mega bridge project, to be built on the Ganges River in Bihar, is expected to be completed by 2030-31. The need for a new bridge arose due to the limitations of the existing bridges, which are already at their capacity. There is an urgent need to establish a connectivity corridor between Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and the entire North India.
A new bridge spanning 2.44 km will be constructed on the Ganges
The 2.44 km long new bridge connecting Bihar to Jharkhand will play a crucial role in boosting connectivity in the region. This project is expected to benefit North and South Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, the Northeast, and even Nepal. It will provide a vital link, enhancing transportation and economic activities in these regions.
Vikramshila-Katariya project: Rs 2549.17 crore invested
The Union Cabinet approved eight railway projects with an estimated cost of Rs 24657 crore on Friday. This includes the Vikramshila-Katariya Rail Bridge project. An investment of Rs 2549.17 crore was approved for this project. The rail project will be 26.23 km long, including a 2.44 km long main bridge.
Fourth rail bridge to be built on the Ganga River in Bihar
Vikramshila station is located on the Bhagalpur-Sahibganj line, while Kataria station is on the Katihar-Barauni line. The Ganga River flows for approximately 450 km from Buxar to Rajmahal in Bihar. Currently, there are only three rail bridges on the Ganga River. This new project will add another mega bridge to the river.
