In their olympic fair Thursdays, he was unable to reach the final race for medals. Several incidents during the competition prevented him from competing for a medal, so after a few days of reflection, he decided to share his feelings.
Paris 2024: Juan Ignacio Maegli’s emotional letter
On the fifth day of competition in the Bay of Marseille, the wind failed to appear, leaving only the rays of the sun to accompany the boats that had been brought to the sea to compete.
But that day, despite waiting for more than four hours, and with the sunset of Monday, August 5, 2024, approaching, the roller coaster remained elusive. This proved a devastating blow for John Ignacio, who despite being in 16th position, knew that good results in the regattas 9 and 10 would allow him to return to the top 10 from which he had fallen due to a sanction.
However, no matter how much he waited in his vessel, the time to tame the eggs and face his rivals never came. “I was doing well, but I was left out of the final and the fight for the medals, but you can’t do more.” said John with a broken voice.
Juani’s gratitude to the Guatemalans
Three days after that setback, John opened his heart, expressing the pain of not being able to enter the medal race. It was a hard blow to the athlete who has managed to be in five Olympic Games, a record shared only by Kevin Badminton Cord.
“Paris 2024 is over and I can’t find the words to express what I’ve been through these past weeks and months. My dream for this last cycle was to be able to do the best job possible as my children would be watching me and I wanted to do a good result so they would be proud.” Maegli posted on his Instagram account.
“I want to thank everyone for the messages of encouragement these past few days and all the support I have received throughout more than 25 years of my career. I am very proud to be Guatemalan; wearing the colors of our flag and having had the opportunity to try to put our country among the best for more than 20 years has been the greatest privilege of my life.” he added velerista who has been present at the jousts since Beijing 2008.
Juan Ignacio’s uncertain future in sailing
However, a few days after saying goodbye to Paris 2024, John has admitted that he is unsure about his future in sport.
“I don’t know what my future holds in the sport, but I will take a few months to evaluate my next goal and pursue it in the best way possible.” he thanked the sailor who has represented Guatemala as Central American and Caribbean champion and Pan-American champion for over 20 years.
For the Guatemalans, it will be difficult to wait and see what the future holds for John. The truth is that the country can feel proud of an athlete who has dedicated himself to sport since childhood.
