Korea Overtakes France to Rank 9th… China 1st - US 2nd
In the index of ‘number of notable papers’, which refers to papers in the science and technology field that are in the top 10% in terms of citations, Korea rose one place, while Japan maintained its ranking outside the top 10, widening the gap.
According to the Sankei Shimbun and Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei), in the “Science and Technology Indicators 2024” report released on the 9th by the Science, Technology and Academic Policy Institute of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, Korea’s “number of notable papers” was 4,314, rising one place from 10th last year to 9th.
On the other hand, Japan ranked 13th with 3,719 flights, the same as the previous year.
This is the annual average of the number of ‘high-profile papers’ that were cited in other papers in the past three years and were in the top 10% in each field. Japan publishes a science and technology index report every year that evaluates paper activities in the science and technology field. This time, the figures for 2020-2022 were reflected.
In this report, Japan maintained its third place in terms of R&D spending and number of researchers, and fifth place in terms of total number of papers, but its number of high-profile papers remained outside the top 10, as it did last year.
Moreover, the number of papers of note in Japan fell from 6th place 10 years ago (2010-2012) to 13th place. On the other hand, during the same period, Korea rose from 12th place to 9th place.
