Bing Steals Market Share from Google in PC Search – Threat to Dominate?
In Korea, Bing has climbed to third place in monthly market share, fueled by strong AI search competitiveness.
Microsoft‘s search engine ‘Bing’ has been steadily gaining market share in the global search market (based on PC) since February. With the introduction of ChatGPT, it is posing a significant threat to Google, the long-time market leader. In the Korean market, Bing has also surpassed Daum, one of the two major domestic portals, and achieved third place in monthly market share for the first time.
According to market research firm StatCounter, Bing’s PC market share last month was 11.8%, while Google’s was 80.3%, a slight decrease from February (82.3%). However, industry experts anticipate that Google’s market share will continue to decline in the future.
In the US market, Bing’s market share has climbed from 15.0% in November of last year to 18.2% in July. Meanwhile, Google maintains a dominant position in the entire search market, including tablets and smartphones, due to the characteristics of its Android operating system. However, Bing has been making its presence felt in the PC search market.
The surge in Bing’s popularity is attributed to the integration of AI search functions. Microsoft, which owns a 49% stake in OpenAI, introduced a search plugin with ChatGPT for Bing last year. Additionally, Bing was designated as the default search engine for ChatGPT.
Other search engine providers are also enhancing their AI capabilities. Naver, for example, has introduced ‘Smart Block,’ a function that provides personalized search results based on user preferences and search intent.
Google is also strengthening its search engine competitiveness by incorporating generative AI ‘Gemini’ into its services.
Despite these advancements, Google is still struggling to prevent a decline in market share. The company has not released any major updates or changes to its search engine in the past seven years.
