Storm Damage Inflicts Major Damage on Jelgava, Latvia
The recent storm and floods in Jelgava, Latvia, have caused widespread damage to the city’s infrastructure and private property. Initial assessments estimate damages to exceed four million euros.
Infrastructure Damage
The storm wreaked havoc on Jelgava’s infrastructure, causing significant damage to street lighting, road signs, and signposts. Washouts and flooding were reported across numerous streets, including Stacijas, Posta, Jāņas, Rūpniiekas, Veidenbaums, Rogu, Dobeles, Garozas, Jānis Čakste boulevard, and the Lithuanian highway overpass.
Tree Damage and Drainage Issues
Over 400 trees succumbed to the storm and subsequent flooding. Emergency measures were undertaken to pump rainwater from streets, gutters, and private properties, utilizing additional heavy-duty pumps and equipment.

The storm caused severe damage to various public facilities and institutions, including:

Financial Implications
The municipality has filed insurance claims for the damaged objects but has encountered denials in several cases. The city estimates the damage to private property at over seven million euros.
Government Assistance Requested
Jelgava municipality has submitted a damage report to the government, requesting compensation for the incurred expenses. The government is expected to make a decision regarding compensation next week.
