(ANSA) – TEHRAN, AUGUST 11 – Iranian courts have reduced prison sentences for two journalists accused of collaborating with the United States, their lawyers told reformist newspapers on Tuesday. Elaheh Mohammadi, 37, and Niloufar Hamedi, 31, are free on bail after more than a year in Tehran’s Evin prison for their coverage of the September 2022 death in custody of Mahsa Amini, a death that sparked nationwide protests. In January, Iran’s judiciary said it had opened new proceedings against the women for posing for photos without the mandatory veil upon their release that month. Two separate Tehran appeals courts ruled to acquit them of collaborating with the United States, their lawyers told the Shargh and Ham Mihan dailies. According to the judiciary, Mohammadi was originally sentenced to six years in prison while Hamedi was sentenced to seven years. The two women were also sentenced to five years each for collusion and conspiracy against state security and one year for propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Lawyers said these sentences were upheld by the appeals court and will be served concurrently.
