German Athletes Arrive Home to Warm Welcome in Cologne
A large part of the German Olympic team arrived in Cologne on a special train on Sunday, greeted by euphoric fans and political dignitaries. The athletes were welcomed with a group photo in front of the cathedral and a reception in the town hall.
Upon their arrival at the platform, the athletes were greeted by cheers and applause from supporters holding German flags and fan clothes. They were accompanied by fans through the main train station to the cathedral.
Special Train for ”Homecoming Journey”
The athletes traveled on a special train decorated with black, red, and gold flags. The journey was dubbed the “Homecoming Tour.” About 100 athletes were welcomed at the Gare du Nord in Paris by Nena, a German singer known for her song “99 Luftballons,” and the French classic “At the Champs-Elysées.”
Relaxing on the Train
Many athletes used the train journey to relax and unwind. Canoeist Max Rendschmidt commented that the athletes were exhausted but needed some rest after the final ceremony. Other athletes reported a quiet and restful train ride.
Gold Medal in the Sock
One athlete shared a humorous anecdote about receiving a gold medal in the sock. The gymnast explained that the medal box was huge and heavy, so they had to wear the sock to protect it.
Farewell to the Spotlight
The arrival in Cologne marked the end of the Olympic spotlight for many athletes. While there was sadness for the conclusion of the Games, there was also a sense of pride and accomplishment. The athletes expressed gratitude for the support they received from fans and the experience they had in Paris.
