## Greece Hit by Wildfires, Thick Smoke Blankets Athens
(ANSA) – ATHENS, AUGUST 11 – Greece was struck by several wildfires on Monday, leaving thick smoke and haze to blanket parts of the capital Athens. As warnings escalated over impending extreme weather, officials expressed concern for the safety of half the country, which was categorized as high risk for wildfires due to soaring temperatures, strong winds, and prolonged drought.

The intense smoke cast such a red glow over Athens that the sky was illuminated in a reddish hue. Emergency responders deployed a team of 165 firefighters, 30 vehicles, seven firefighting planes, and five helicopters to combat the blaze. Evacuation orders were issued for residents of Varnavas.
Another fire broke out in Megara, western Attica, prompting an evacuation alert. A force of 48 firefighters, supported by 13 vehicles and volunteers, worked to contain the fire.
