As BTS’s Suga is accused of drunk driving, a bizarre “Sugar Challenge” has emerged among overseas fans.
Recently, a challenge appeared on social networking services where BTS’s overseas fans cheered for Suga using the hashtag ‘#SugaChallenge’. The challenge involves fans getting behind the wheel of a car and holding a bottle of alcohol while driving.
One fan posted a photo of themselves driving drunk with the hashtag ‘#SugaChallenge’ and wrote, “If the person I like goes to jail, I’ll go with them,” while another posted a photo of a bottle of alcohol with the caption, “We’re on Suga’s side.”
Suga is being criticized for driving an electric scooter while intoxicated. His distorted fandom is also being pointed out.
On the other hand, some claim that the challenge was intentionally created by anti-BTS fans to spread negative public opinion about Suga.
According to police and others, on the 9th, Suga was found drunk and fallen over while riding an electric scooter. His blood alcohol level was 0.227%, which is considered intoxicated.
Suga stated during police questioning that he had had about one glass of beer.
Specifically, Suga’s blood alcohol concentration level is a level that can be subject to increased punishment under the current law. If the blood alcohol concentration level is 0.08% or higher, the driver’s license is revoked, and a prison sentence of 1 to 2 years is imposed, along with a fine of 5 to 10 million won. However, if the level exceeds 0.2%, the punishment is strengthened to a prison sentence of 2 to 5 years and a fine of 10 to 20 million won.
Sugar also apologized through Weverse, saying, “I violated road traffic laws because I thought it was a short distance and did not realize that I could not ride an electric kickboard while intoxicated.” He added, “No one was harmed or any facilities were damaged in the process, but this is my responsibility and I have no excuses, so I bow my head and apologize to everyone.”
It was also revealed by the police that Suga was riding an electric scooter with a seat, rather than a regular kickboard that only has a pedal and can be ridden while standing.
Sugar is currently working as a social service worker.
Meanwhile, some BTS fandom ARMY members said that the challenge was created and spread by anti-BTS fans for the purpose of mockery, and asked fans not to be fooled by it.
