Theodoros Bechrakis has passed away. He served as the mayor of Athens in 2006 and was also the Deputy General Director of New Democracy during Konstantinos Mitsotakis’s presidency.
In a condolence statement, New Democracy expresses that it “says goodbye with sadness and deep emotion to Theodoros Bechrakis,” a “great man and fighter for the Party, who stood out for his ethics, consistency, and activism.”
His anti-dictatorship actions and his journey in politics and Local Government
Theodoros Bechrakis was born in 1943 in Athens, originating from Mani, and studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens.
In 1968, he was arrested for his anti-dictatorial actions and imprisoned. In 1974, after the restoration of democracy, he served as the Prefect of Karditsa.
“Beyond his timeless contribution to New Democracy, during the presidency of Konstantinos Mitsotakis, he served the party he loved so much as Deputy General Director, responsible for organization and political planning (1990-1993)” emphasizes New Democracy in its announcement.
The deceased was elected as a municipal councilor of Athens in the municipal elections of 2002 and 2006 and served as President of the Municipal Council during both terms. From February 23 to December 31, 2006, he served as Mayor of Athens.
“We say goodbye to him with respect and gratitude for all he contributed,” notes New Democracy, expressing its condolences to the family of the deceased.
