The Austrian medal winners received a fitting welcome on their return to Austria. It got really loud at Vienna-Schwechat Airport on Monday evening as families and fans welcomed their heroes with live music. Kitesurfer Valentin Bontus and Lara Vadlau and Lukas Mähr, who also won gold, were able to celebrate, as were bronze climbers Jakob Schubert and Jessica Pilz.
The Olympic Games will be remembered
The atmosphere was great, especially for Bontus it was a lot of fun. A musical delegation gathered from his home community of Perchtoldsdorf and their performance was in competition with the Music of the Austrian Armed Forces Guard, who were also present. Friends and family of the 23-year-old showed up with flying boards, flaming confetti cannons and making a lot of noise with horns. Some were dressed in white based on the ÖSV racing suit worn by Bontus during his races.
“It’s incredible to see so many faces who were sitting at home with their fingers crossed. It’s great that I can bring them a gold medal,” said the Lower Austrian in an interview with ORF. Vadlau was also happy to be home again at last. “We’ve been away for a long time now, since July 22. Now it’s even nicer to be welcomed like this,” said the sailor.
To the delight of the fans, the five presented the medals again and gave interviews before the athletes went home. On Tuesday evening there will be another medal celebration in Vienna’s Hofburg in honor of successful ÖOC athletes. Judoka Michaela Polleres, who also did well in Paris, landed back in Vienna a week ago after winning the bronze.
