The Sudanese government presented several observations regarding the consultative meeting held in Saudi Arabia, regarding Sudan’s invitation to participate in the Geneva Forum.

The Sudanese government said in a statement: “The American delegation did not commit to pushing the rebel militia to commit to implementing the “Jeddah Declaration,” which includes a commitment to protect civilians in Sudan and is based on international humanitarian law and human rights law.”

He pointed out that “the American delegation insisted on the participation of the United Arab Emirates as an observer in the meeting,” adding that “the American delegation did not provide any justification for establishing a new platform, and relied on incorrect information in assessing the situation in Sudan.”

The Sudanese government continued, “It expresses the aspirations and hopes of the Sudanese people, who are exposed to all forms of violence and serious violations, and have lost their material, moral and cultural achievements and properties at the hands of the rebel militia.”

The Sudanese government concluded by stressing its “adherence to implementing the ‘Jeddah Declaration’ signed on May 11, 2023, rejects the presence of any new observers or facilitators, and welcomes initiatives that meet, respond to, and preserve the country’s sovereignty and the dignity of the Sudanese people.”

It is noteworthy that the consultative meeting was held on August 9 and 10 in Saudi Arabia, between the representative of the Sudanese government, Minister Mohamed Bashir Abu Namu, and the American delegation headed by the American envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello.

Mohamed Bashir Abu Namu, head of the Sudanese government delegation, announced in consultative meetings with the United States in the Saudi city of Jeddah that an agreement had failed to be reached on the participation of a Sudanese government delegation in the talks scheduled to begin in Geneva on August 14.

Last Friday, the Sudanese government decided to send a delegation to the Saudi city of Jeddah, with the aim of consulting with the American side regarding the invitation extended to the Sudanese parties to attend peace negotiations in Geneva, on August 14.

According to United Nations data, fighting has been ongoing between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023, resulting in about 13,100 deaths, while the total number of displaced people in Sudan has reached about 7.9 million people, and about 2.1 million people to neighboring countries.
