Presidential candidate, Eng. Mohamed Al-Mazoughi, has officially submitted his nomination papers to assume the position of Prime Minister of a unified government for Libya.

Al-Mazoughi submitted his nomination papers, including the endorsements of the members of the Supreme Advisory Council of the State and the members of the House of Representatives, in accordance with the requirements for nomination, according to the Wal Agency.

Dr. Salama Al-Ghweil also submitted his candidacy file for the presidency of the new Libyan government to the Libyan House of Representatives.

The candidate’s team for the presidency of the government said, “This step is considered an important development in the Libyan political scene, as Al-Ghweil aims, through his candidacy, to end the political division, unify government institutions, and reach the expected elections, in an effort to lead the country towards a stage of stability and development.”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, “announced the opening of nominations for the position of Prime Minister,” calling on “everyone who wishes to run for office and believes he is qualified to submit his nomination documents to the office of the Council’s rapporteur in the city of Benghazi.”

The House of Representatives statement explained that “the announcement of opening the door for candidacy came “based on the statement issued by members of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State following a meeting in Cairo on July 18, 2024,” in which they announced “their adherence to the necessity of holding presidential and legislative elections in accordance with the laws agreed upon and issued by the House of Representatives.”

In June 2023, the “6+6” Committee, formed by the House of Representatives and the “High State Council,” issued the laws through which the expected elections will be held.

Last March, “in the presence of the heads of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed Al-Menfi, the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, and the Supreme Council of State, Mohammed Takala, the heads of the three Libyan councils agreed on the “necessity of forming a unified government whose mission is to supervise the electoral process, provide the necessary services to the citizen, and unify sovereign positions,” according to a statement by the Arab League at the time.”

They also agreed to “form a single new government, by calling on the House of Representatives to announce the opening of nominations and begin receiving endorsements and studying the files of candidates to head a government of competencies with national leadership that will oversee the running of the country’s affairs and the holding of elections.”
