House of Councilors (Upper House) member Muneo Suzuki claimed that Japan is the country that can play a mediating role in the war in Ukraine.

On the 13th (local time), Rep. Suzuki explained to TASS, “Japan is the only country among the Group of Seven (G7) that has not supplied weapons to Ukraine. It can play a mediating role in resolving the war in Ukraine.”

“That’s why Japan can stand in the middle and act as a mediator. I think we should take advantage of this position,” he said.

He also said, “The Japanese government should also play a leading role in efforts to promote armistice and peace-building,” and “I propose that Japan move forward on the path toward armistice and peace.”

Suzuki predicted that the Group of 20 (G20), an expanded grouping of major economies beyond the G7, could play an important role.

He said, “When the G7 emerged, these countries accounted for 80% of the world economy. But now they account for only 40%,” and emphasized that “the G20, which includes Russia, China, India, Brazil, South Africa, Turkey, and Korea, currently accounts for 80% (of the world economy).”

Among them, China, India and Brazil proposed a ceasefire agreement, he said, adding, “I think this proposal is realistic.”

He visited Russia late last month and announced plans to relay the details of his conversations with Russian officials to Japanese government officials and close aides to Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

He first visited Russia in October last year. At the time, he was expelled from his party, Japan Restoration Party, after visiting without prior notice.

On the 2nd, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed that there are currently more than 110 countries that support the Ukraine peace plan jointly proposed by China and Brazil.

In May, China and Brazil proposed a “joint recognition for a political solution to the Ukraine crisis.”

The joint recognition consists of six articles: ▲ Prohibition of expansion, escalation, and provocation of the front line ▲ Holding of an international peace conference with equal participation and fair discussions by Russia and Ukraine ▲ Expansion of humanitarian aid, protection of civilians, and exchange of prisoners of war ▲ Opposition to the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), including nuclear weapons, biological and chemical weapons, and efforts to prevent nuclear crises ▲ Opposition to attacks on nuclear power plants and peaceful nuclear facilities ▲ Opposition to the division of the world and closed political and economic collectivization, and maintenance of supply chain stability.

This is different from the 10-point peace formula proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

China is using shuttle diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine war. Instead of a Ukraine-centric peace summit, it is moving to hold an international conference with equal participation from Russia and Ukraine.
