COVID-19, which was thought to be over, is showing signs of spreading again with a mutant virus. The detection rate of the COVID-19 pathogen has more than tripled from an average of 6.4% in June to 20.3% in July. Infectious disease experts said, “The risk of mutant virus infection is lurking all over the world and we will experience it repeatedly like the flu.”

During the severe pandemic, children were also greatly affected. This is because schools were one of the places that were closed due to concerns about infection. As the cycle of new infectious diseases becomes shorter and the possibility of new viruses appearing due to global warming increases, schools have become important places where thorough prevention and countermeasures must be prepared in advance.

Recently, a public elementary school in Songdo, Incheon, has been attracting attention for taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, such as installing antiviral copper alloy handles on classrooms and public handles in its newly built building.

Jasper Co., Ltd., a company specializing in antibacterial copper, developed an ‘antiviral doorknob’ using copper alloy through eight years of research and development and launched it for the first time in Korea. The antiviral doorknob is an eco-friendly product that does not discolor and does not contain any chemicals, and has obtained research results from Chungbuk National University College of Medicine that 100% of coronaviruses are killed. Unlike existing antibacterial film products, you can enjoy permanent antibacterial effects simply by replacing the handle.

A study found that when actual antiviral copper alloy handles were used in hospital intensive care units, cross-infections were reduced by more than 60%. Based on these results, Yonsei University’s Industry-Academic Cooperation Group proposed a research report on establishing standards for school facilities to prevent cross-infections. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s ‘Research Report on Establishing Standards for School Facilities Responding to Infectious Diseases’ states that handles made of copper alloy are an alternative.

Hands are easily contaminated with secretions, and infectious diseases can be transmitted to multiple people through frequently touched objects such as doorknobs. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced that if the virus touches a person’s mucous membranes such as the nose, mouth, and ears before it disappears, it can be transmitted to the respiratory tract without direct contact, thereby spreading the virus.

80% of all infections are caused by contact. Even if you wash your hands with soap and water for more than 30 seconds, you can still be exposed to infection if you touch a doorknob after washing. Each local education office is only emphasizing personal hygiene rules such as washing your hands and covering your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when you cough.

There are 942 elementary, middle, and high schools in Incheon, but the only one with antiviral doorknobs is a public elementary school in Songdo. In advanced countries such as Canada, the United States, and Europe, copper is widely used in public institutions, hospitals, and buses to prevent cross-infection.

A parent of an elementary school student in Namdong-gu, Incheon said, “Students at public elementary schools in Songdo, a new city, are receiving infection prevention benefits such as the installation of anti-viral handles, but Namdong-gu, which is in the city center, is relatively neglected,” and added, “I hope the local government will implement various measures to protect the health of children.”
