The Minister of Public Works, Romeo Herrera, announced that his department is working to restore traffic on the collapsed bridge in the Lourdes canton, in the Colón district.
Since last weekend, the Ministry of Public Works has begun mitigation work in response to the emergency. The actions include the intervention in a gully formed on the main street and the construction of a new bridge, which collapsed due to heavy rains.
Rodríguez explained that the necessary studies are being carried out to begin construction of the new bridge. “The bridge collapsed, but there is an alternative route available, which has allowed us to work on a permanent solution immediately. We are building a higher, concrete bridge, and it is not necessary to install a temporary bridge due to the alternative routes.”
The teams have begun topographic and soil studies for the construction process, which will be approximately 20 metres long. In addition, in the Campos Verdes 2 development, work is being done to repair a sinkhole caused by the collapse of sewage and rainwater pipes. The damaged pipe has been replaced and a study of the nearby areas has been carried out, identifying another area at risk of forming a new sinkhole.
“We have already replaced the damaged pipes, but a recent inspection revealed another section in poor condition. We have immediately begun new interventions,” said the head of Public Works.
